Richmond Licensing

Use of Trademarks

The Office of Collegiate Licensing governs the reproduction of University marks on merchandise of any kind, or for commercial purposes. The Office of Collegiate Licensing requires that companies wishing to produce merchandise containing University marks be licensed by the University of Richmond; submit all products and artwork to the University for approval prior to production, and except where exempted in the policy, pay royalties the University.

University Departments

Internal Use: For university use such as letterhead, brochures, reports, etc., there is no licensing approval required. However, the trademarks may not be altered in any way. If applicable, the trademark or registration designation must be included. Trademark and/or word mark images can be obtained by contacting the Office of Collegiate Licensing at 804-287-6668 or via email at jmorrall@richmond.edu.

External Use: University departments, with permission of the Collegiate Licensing Manager, may use university marks to raise funds for their own organization or for charitable support. Items purchased for such purposes must be acquired from a University of Richmond licensee and have the artwork approved by the University of Richmond's Office of Collegiate Licensing (licensed vendors will submit the artwork for you.) The licensee or organization will be required to pay royalties on the product in some cases. Please contact the Office of Collegiate Licensing for specifics or with any questions.

The trademarks should not be altered in any way and the proper trademark or registration designation must be included in the design. Alteration of the trademarks may dilute them and weaken their protection.

Student Groups

Student groups recognized by the university may purchase merchandise bearing University marks, but all such purchases must include the group's identification on the product and must be purchased from a licensed vendor. Prior to purchase, the organization must submit an Art Approval Form, accompanied by the proposed design, to the Manager of Collegiate Licensing for advance approval. All merchandise purchased for student members of the organization will be exempt from royalties; however, merchandise for resale, to anyone else, even as a fund-raiser for charity, will require royalties to be paid by the manufacturer.

The trademarks should not be altered in any way and the proper trademark or registration designation must be included in the design. Alteration of the trademarks may dilute them and weaken their protection.
